Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is concerned with inter-relationships between the structure of the body (the musculo-skeletal system) and the way in which the whole body functions. Many things can alter the body framework and may adversely affect the functions of the tissues involved. These could include congenital and developmental abnormality, injury, disease states or habitual misuse or over-use. These adverse effects are most obvious within the musculo-skeletal system, but osteopathic treatment can also influence beneficially other areas of the body, such as respiratory and vascular systems.

Osteopaths work with their hands, using a wide variety of treatment techniques. These may for example, include soft tissue stretching techniques, passive joint movements to improve mobility, or manipulation techniques designed to improve the function of a joint. Gentle release techniques are widely used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients. Osteopaths are concerned with the structural integrity of the whole person.

What does Kendal House Clinic offer?

Osteopathy at Kendal House offers a broad spectrum of treatments from the structural to the cranial-sacral approach. Our aim is to offer not only the best quality osteopathy, but also good effective advice for your speedy recovery.

Your first appointment will include a comprehensive case history including your past medical history, a thorough examination (for which you may be required to shed a layer of clothing to your underwear), a discussion about your diagnosis and prognosis and what osteopathy, and you, can do. We will contact your doctor unless, of course, you do not wish this. If we can help, we will offer you a treatment there and then, if not we will try to help you find the right assistance for your health.

Robin is our first in line structural osteopath, his expertise is in the treatment of acute and chronic musculo-skeletal problems. He is also able to use cranial techniques including treatment of babies and young children. His osteopathic approach is thorough, calm and sensitive to your own individual need.

Robin came to osteopathy after being impressed by an osteopath who got his neck better very quickly. Since then there has been no going back. Robin enjoys the challenge of helping someone in acute pain, his patients are always given the utmost care and time. He gets on well with everyone, having a good rapport with both young and old.

He mainly works from the Kendal House Clinic but also works at our satellite clinic in Barrowford.

I set out in osteopathy to be able to treat children. I have learned the cranial/sacral technique (and now teaching with The Sutherland Cranial College) which has enabled me to treat adults and children. However, my love of children has led me to actively encourage children in the clinic. We liaise closely with health visitors and GPs and work on newborns with such complaints as colic, restlessness, failure to sleep, brain damage - the list is endless and varied. In older children we treat glue-ear, combining cranial work with self help techniques, as well as dyspraxia, Downs syndrome, dental help etc.

I offer free mum and baby check-ups to mums with babies under 6 months of age. 30% of all born infants would benefit from osteopathic treatment. This helps to screen for them and also clear up any back and neckache in the mother. This offer unfortunately doesn't cover any treatment.

Daniel Thomas

Daniel Thomas - Associate

Daniel's interest in manual therapy began while he was living in rural Japan, where he was taught shiatsu by one of the local practitioners. On returning to the UK he enrolled at The British School of Osteopathy and soon became involved in one of the school's community clinics - providing osteopathy to children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Daniel has an interest in sports injuries and provides pitch-side assistance for one of the local rugby teams.

Daniel has studied Classical Osteopathy under John Wernham, who at 99 years old must be the oldest practicing osteopath in the world! This provided a firm basis in the founding principles of osteopathy, which was developed before modern medicines as a system for treating all manner of diseases by supporting and assisting the body's ability to heal itself.
